Sure appreciate insight on how to change the fan belt without undoing the radiator etc.

Just took off my alternator and I'm getting it rebuilt (3rd time in 5 years) and now I noticed the fan belt is defective.

Is there an easy way to remove it as the plastic fan blades are in the way and there is not enough space to slip it between the blades and the rad protector.

Anyone else having trouble with their alternator. Any ideas what could be wrong.

Hi Mike, you should be able to find a gap between the fan blades and the rad cowl to get the belt through. If not squeeze it through past each blade in turn by turning blades to an easily accessible position. As for the alternator problem, it could be many things - battery, control box, someone using jump leads or welding on tractor/machine with battery leads connected. The replacement alternators for these have a built in regulator and do not use the one under the dash. Hope this helps. Mike

Many thanks for your advice. I originally tired to press the fan belt between the blades but thought I'd break them.

After you confirmed it to be okay, I re-tried and sure enough off it came. Took only 2 minutes to replace the new one since I was used to it.

Looks like the rotor and some bearings were gone this time on the alternator so just routine wear and doesn't seem to be electrical short.

I also broke down and bought a new battery. The old one was over 10 years old.

Everything now up and running (hope it stays that way!).

Many thanks for your help ixer0!!!!!
