HELP
I want to remove the fuel tank on my 6745 for painting, but the steering wheel is frozen (rusted) on the shaft and the end of the shaft is starting to mushroom over from a puller (before i got it)

Is it possible to remove the column from the top of the steering box instead? .... Or will the balls fall out?[/]
The manual is not clear on this point!

Regards

Steve

Anybody tried this before?

We never took any fuel pumps off, allways sprayed the tank red first, then next day wrap it in a garbage bag and spray the chassis..

But on the older tractors (4712, 3011) i think you could detach the dashboard from the tank and fold it off the steering column... How it works with the 4 cylinders, i am not sure...

Hi Renze,
Already unbolted the Dash off the tank, however the steering column goes through the tank (not just a U cut out, but a hole)
so the only way to get it off is to A, remove the steering Wheel, or B remove the Steering column from the steering box....... but i do not understand the manual as to if the balls will all fall out, or if there is a splined coupling between the steering wheel shaft (inner) and the Worm (input) shaft in the steering box.

My tank is a little rusty (inside and out) and i was going to sand blast and Galvernise it (along with all the front pannels, at the sand blasters now)
the tractor lives outside and Hot Dip galv is cheaper than paint ;)
It will be a "Silver Zetor " until i get my new Shed built, then i will paint it Orange again :)

Cheers

Hi Steve,

I had the same problem with the steering wheel on my 3045. I had to use the pullers to get it off although the end of the shaft wasn't mushroomed like yours. I used 2 legs on the pullers attached to a clamp bolted together below the wheel. Lots of WD40 and a decent pair of pullers. I might suggest filing of the the end of the shaft to remove the mushroom before you start. I did take the whole steering column out off the steering box beforehand to make life a bit easier. There was no ball bearings inside the steering box just two blocks that slide up and down on a threaded block around the column. Hopes this helps.

OK but 3045 steering was different than the later ball spindles on the later models. But i have never had a steering box open, so i cant tell...

hi, i had this problem on a 3045, after talking to a old and very experenced zetor mechaic, who told me to fill the center on the steering wheel with petrol and light it!! he said the steering wheel would jump off and hit me in the face! and it did!! currently trying to get steering wheel off my 3011 and this hasnt worked yet!! becarefull if you try have water ready sometime the steering wheel can catch fire.

That sounds like fun, i will try it when the rain stops ;)

Putting the puller on, and leaving it on for a day or two with some WD40 soaking in the centre can work also. With the temperature changes over day to night, it will eventually work loose if you just keep enough tension on it. I work on mining equipment that has some massive tapers, and generally put a 100 tonne jack under them, go and have some lunch, and while you're eating - BANG, off they pop. Shortly followed by everyone dropping their lunch and swearing!! A few sharp taps on the end of the puller helps too, but you may mushroom the end of the shaft if it's only soft. Try putting the puller on, and tapping the rim of the steering wheel with a rubber or timber mallet to jar it loose. Be sure to leave the nut on the end of the thread so it can't mushroom also. Another idea, you can get freeze spray in a can, spray the shaft with tension on the puller.

Thanks for all the tips guys :)

I went to a tractor wrecker that is closing down today, (5 hour round trip) they had several Zetors on their way to the scrappy..... nothing much of any use left, but there was a whole pile of UR1 steering columns removed from the box, most of them had also been cut through with a gas-axe in order to remove the tank.
i can now confirm you cannot remove the column without losing the balls! ....... and even then, the fat end of the column does not fit through the hole in the tank, so you are still stuck with the Dash, Tank and steering column and wheel all floppy attached to each other.......... so not helpful for painting!...... or galvanizing!!!

I will tackle the Steering Wheel removal again when the rain stops, i dont have the proper puller so will have to fabricate something as the shaft is too soft to belt with a hammer.
It has been soaking in CRC for the last week, so that may have helped.

Cheers
Steve
