I have been reconditioning the brakes on a Zetor 3045.
This involved fitting new cylinders / springs etc...
I have replaced the two sealing rings (oil rings) in the brake backplate.
One is a 45 x 62 x 12 that is held in a fixing cover that attaches to the rear of the brake backplate with 3 screws - this goes all the way into the cover - no problem with its position.

The second seal is a 50 x 72 x 12 that sits in front of the bearing on the front side of the brake backplate. I took them out a few days ago and now that I have the new ones to fit I notice they can go in the location all the way up to the bearing or a few mm back from the bearing. ( I didn't make a note of the position - where they correct anyway?)
The position of this seal is important because it runs on the outside of the inner location in the brake drum and if the seal is too far in it will miss the location.
Is there a known distance to position the seal from the face of the brake backplate? Any cross section drawings?

Any info will be greatly appreciated - if the rear axles have to come off again due to leaks it is not an easy 10 minute job!!

i have a book here with drawings in it but i cant find the larger seal you are on about! i found the smaller one . can you do a picture or try and explain easier!;)

Matthew I have a digital photo of the backplate I took off.
My email is steve.foster@ametek.co.uk if you send me a blank email I will attach the picture for you to look at.

Thanks,

Steve

ok now you know as you look at the backplate from the side which bolts on to the halfshaft casing. you follow? well the seal should be fitted so as you look at this side, the seal will face you with its numbers facing you.

e.g you look at the seal and it will say 50x60x10 for instance!well this is the side which should be facing inside the halfshaft casing.

all the best

Matthew, thanks for the reply.
The direction the seal faces I am ok with.
It is the distance it goes into the locating bore - it can go flush with the casting or upto 5mm in sitting right on top of the bearing.
The seal is 12mm deep and there is a bore about 17mm deep for it too locate. I don't want to push it in too far or not enough as I am sure the location of the brake drum shaft which goes into could miss the actual seal...
A distance from the back of the seal to the face plate on the opposite side might be available in a Zetor 3011 repair manual which I do not have..
