Hi all,

I have a query about my 1977 5718. Earlier in the year after many months of difficulty starting and low power the tractor refused to start. A mechanic looked at it and advised that the injector pump needed to be reconditioned. The pump was sent off to be reconditioned and when it was refitted there was trouble getting the tractor. Eventually after a couple of hours of my mechanic fiddling with the tractor it started (badly) but it was very smoky (white smoke). The mechanic said to give it a good day working ant that that should free out the rack.
However after 4/5 weeks the tractor was still smoky and unless I have it well opened up (high revs) when trying to drive it the tractor just dies when any load comes on it. I have replaced the lift pump as the old one was leaking but there has been no change. I have also noticed that diesel seems to be mixing with the oil as the oil level is increasing and is getting very thin. Also the tractor starts better when the cold start button is pushed in...

Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem may be and more importantly what the solution may be?

Regards

Poor compression is very likely to be part of your problem. Its worth just checking the valve tappet clearences first in case they have closed up.If all seems to be ok then get someone to do a compression check on all 4 cylinders and compare the results of each cylinder OR just remove all the separate cylinder heads and check the valves, valve guides, valve seats and pistons and cylinder bore for wear.Diesel fuel contaminating the engine oil could be unburnt fuel from poor combustion.Did you had your injectors overhauled at the same time as the FI pump ??.Also the FI timing needs to be checked to make sure the fuel is injected at exactly the right time.
I am working on a 3 cylinder engine on my 1972 4WD 3545......i have fitted new liners and pistons. The cylinders heads are being overhauled as the valves and guides and seats (particularly the exhaust seat) were in poor condition.I have done the injectors myself (fitted new nozzles and set the pressures).

Im not sure how to check the fuel injection timing as i have not refitted my own pump back on my engine but i did make some marks prior to removal.Hopefully someone on the forum can advise on how to do it properly. All i know is that in my owners manual which covers the 2,3 and 4 cylinder Zetor models with the 95mm bores (2511,3511,3545,4511,5511,5545) the injection timing is given as 20-21 degrees before TDC.The FI pump mounting holes are "slotted" to allow adjustment (by loosening the nuts and then slightly turning the FI pump clockwise or anti clockwise and then re tightening the nuts).

From all my pump removals on many 35s and 30s the pump tooth will only locate in one place. The pump does rotate slightly in a slotted holed to fine tune the timing but shouldnt smoke white. Is it lumpy?
Surely the injector pipes cant be fitted wrong can they?
Fuel in the oil is from the injector pump leaking into the sump.
You have changed the lift pump so that shouldnt be it. As it did this with the old pump fitted yes?
(white smoke) truthfully id get the pump checked again.
The copper washers are a pain to seal on all the banjos but it wouldnt cause white smoke in my experiences.
