Zetor 7245 Power Steering

I acquired a 7245 & have been working to get it put back together. The engine seems good & runs well, but everything else has been a nightmare. I've done the easy things - replacing hoses, fuel lines, brake lines, electrical re-wiring , new starter. Now the hard stuff.

The clutch was always flakey, so I replaced the slave & master cylinders. Now it works great.

After I had that done, the power steering went. I did add some ATF fluid after removing the cylinder to install a new boot cover. It never worked well anyways & always seemed temperamental, but now when the tractor is running the wheels just ram to the left & will not move without an excessive amount of force. I can move them fairly easily with the tractor off , so I don't think the problem is a steering gear issue.

I've been told the problem is likely the seals in the booster, and I should replace the whole cylinder. I'm not thrilled about spending $700 for a new one, especially if it's just a matter or an adjustment.

I don't see any leaks of ATF fluid.

The rear brakes are gone, too, and I can hear a leak of air when I mash down on the brakes from the right-hand slave cylinder. I've read they originals were crap, so I'll have to tear the rear end apart one day & replace them both.

The only other serious issue is that the breather is spitting oil. Not ton, but a fair amount & definitely enough to require consistent filling. From what I read it's likely to be the result of improperly seated piston rings, and a few good days of work will likely re-seat them and eliminate the pressure causing the breather to spit oil. Unfortunately because of the brakes, clutch & steering, I haven't been able to actually use it for anything.

It was overheating, too, but I think that was just a dirty radiator. The fins are pretty well cleaned out now & I'm confident that's not going to be an issue again.

we have one of those tractors, bought it brand new in 1987,the day in came to us on the back of a the dealers truck,it wouldn`t start.
even before the warranty had run out big lumps of the tractor had been replaced.over the next few years every thing that could go wrong with it did,even one of the rear stub axles fell off.

it went on fire twice,got stuck in reverse loads of times eventhough the gear stick was in 1st gear.the clutch and the brakes were always going wrong on it.
in the five years we have it, we easy paid twice the price of the tractor on repairs.

In my opinion you be better off bring it to a big scrap yard and swopping it for a bicycle:)

our 5245 was heavily abused with a loader on it, and only the front axle failed costly because of that. The master clutch and brake cylinders dont cost that much, and for the rest we only had normal wear and tear. the 12 series glitches were those master cylinders, and that the fuel feed pump was designed for a gravity fed system of the older models, not for a tank below the cab, which caused it to suck air.

The 7 series was bullet proof, but the 12 series was still way better than what MF offered in that era....


 
Hi,

Don't be too hasty replacing the steering ram. It is probably just adjustment needed. At the rear end of the chrome steering piston is a clamp with a 12mm headed bolt through it. Loosen this and screw the piston anti-clockwise slightly. There is normally about a 2mm gap at the back between the piston and the casting. I would advise doing it with the engine stopped because if you go too far it will spin to the right. You have to find a central point. I usually jack the front up to set them.

the zetor 6718 was one of the best tractors we ever had. yes did major amount of work.never gave trouble,bought brand new in 1977,still kept with when 7245 came and got us out of a hole when it new big sister was sick,and was still on the farm when that piece of crap was loaded up and replaced by a brand new 8145,oh the joy of been able to walk up to your tractor press the button and away you go.

not like that 7245 yoke.
