hi the other day there my gear stick stopped working properly.
On my 35/45. Has been fine but then for no apparent reason it will not travel back from the 4th /5th neutral position, if you see what I mean. It goes in to 4th or 5th but nothing else.
I haven't started dismantling anything yet but I suppose I'll have to.
Does anyone have any suggestions before I do?

Hi
The 2.and3. gear shiftfork migt be out of alingment, try unskruing the midle detent and push the fork bakk or fort untill it lines up.

If what Bjarne said isnt it, the glider block on the bottom of the lever tilts because the slots in the transmission are worn.

I welded the wear grooves on a 6718 and a 3011, i dont weld them entirely, i make sure the top of my weld beads are no higher than the original surface because filing and grinding isnt my favourite job. Weld cast iron with just seconds at a time, so the heat can distribute evenly so it wont crack. cracking isnt a big risk because there is no mechanical load on the lips on the transmission, just surface wear so its ok if it gets a little brittle.

Only weld with the transmission top cover off, once a mechanic had 2nd degree burns to his forehead and lost half of his hair by welding it with only the selector housing removed.

I also ground a radius to the square block under the gearlever so it finds its way easier.

Thanks I'll look at it soon I,m away quite a bit recently so haven't had the time. It's on my mind annoying me though.
Bjarne what do you mean by the detent?

Bjarne what do you mean by the detent?

ON top of the top gear box cover there is a row of screw caps, one above each selector rod
(selector rods run forward and back in the top cover)
under each screw cap is a spring and ball, this is the detent spring, the selector rods have groves (detents) ground in them in the correct position for neutral and for in gear, when the springs get weak or the grove wares the selector rod can giggle out of neutral while you are in another gear, particularly if transporting the tractor, or using on steep terrain.

Sometimes if you remove the effected detent cap, spring, ball, and holder, you can use a small screw driver down the hole to encourage the selector rod back into neutral and align the gate to allow the gear leaver to go all the way to the end of the gate.
(the selector that has moved, is the one you cannot currently select, Note the PTO has it's own selector rods parallel and outside of the gear change selector rods)

you can usually feel the detent jump in and out of the grove by holding your finger on the top of the cap, but if not take the cap off (one at a time) and you will see the spring jump up and down, once you have identified the rods for each 2 gears, the one that has not moved is the one that is in the wrong position :)

Failing that (on cab-less model, or with cab floor removed) you can remove the gearstick ball housing and simply pull on the end of the selector to align the gate.
on my 6745 removing the crud took longer than fixing the problem........ (20mins all up .... having never touched a Zetor before...... as it had got its self into 1st gear while on the back of the delivery truck the day i got it, and i had to fix it before i could back it off the truck ;)
i also swapped the detent springs around to fix the problem from occurring again, as my 1st/2nd selector detent spring was very weak, and the PTO detent was overly strong.

I have had no problems since.

Thanks Steve, I think I've got the picture of whats going on now
you have all been very help full. I'll let you know how I get on in a few days.:)

Ha Ha!!
Success. Detent rod it was!
I removed the ball spring holder for the detent rod and jiggled the gear stick a bit and hey-presto it went back to where it should be.
put the ball spring back in and now all is well again.
It took about ten minutes.
I have often wondered what all of those screw caps were for.
What a fantastic resource the forum is, thanks again for your replies!

Glad it worked!
If it happens again you will need a stronger spring in the detent.
Cheers
Steve
