The mechanic wants you to trade it for something else, so he can free up his yard, buy your 7211 cheap, fix it and make money on it...
When i had an electrical short circuiting (cable fire) in my car, we brought it to a dealer because i needed it to drive to work and didnt had time to fix it. My brother who towed me there, asked if he had any used cars for sale in the 5 to 7000 Euro price range. Later that day the dealer called me and said 500 euro would be nothing, for a repair like this. which was quite some for an old car.
I decided to buy an old Ford Sierra for 300 Euro, which i drove for about 2 months untill the certificate of roadworthiness was expired, and the car went to the junkyard. In the meantime, fixing the Volvo cost me 2 hours of work, 5 euro for some wires and connectors and isolating tape, and i could replace the toasted battery with the one i kept from that old Ford Sierra.
I told my brother right away that the dealer tagged the repair costs way to high because my brother lead him to believe i would easily buy an 8000 Euro car of him...
You can replace a clutch with 2 people in 1 day. On a non-cabbed, non powersteering model it can be done in a 4 to 5 hour monday evening.
